Symposium: Art in conflict
A rearmament of knowledge
Theater is the essential art form of democracy. It has the power to question the current state we find ourselves in, helps create a sense of unity and a sense of purpose, and most importantly, enables us to reflect on who we are as world citizens.

The world as we know it is changing. There is an ongoing escalation of tension and conflict, and millions are being forced to flee - confronting us and reminding us that no one is immune to global threats. Never before has it been more important to encourage critical thinking in a now “Post Truth World”. As institutions of mediation, whether it be performative art or research-based knowledge, we need to ask ourselves, how do we respond? What is our role in developing democracy? How is this reflected in our mandates, and how do we move forward? We are eager and hopeful as we invite you to the spring symposium “Art in Conflict”, where the outmost goal is to open channels for collaboration, communication and explore joint execution of mandates—for artists and audiences of tomorrow.
The symposium is a collaboration between the Center for Peace Studies at UiT the Arctic University of Norway, and Hålogaland Teater with the support of the Foundation Fritt Ord, The Goethe Institute, and Istituto Italiano di Cultura. Guest performances with excerpts from Lykkejegerne (Hunt for happiness) and Journeys of Exile.
